Start of the new IMLA group and project task: Freising - Alternative Futures for an Everyday Landscape

A new group of 29 students started mid of March 2026 with the IMLA (International Master of Landscape Architecture) programme on the campus in Freising-Weihenstephan.

Scope of this year's Main Project 1

'Freising - Alternative Futures for an Everyday Landscape'

will be on the eastern edge of Freising’s historical downtown, roughly covering the intersection of General-von-Nagel-Straße, Isarstraße and Mainburgerstraße. This area has undergone intensive transformation since 1975, so roughly 50 years ago, a period when most of Western Europe turned into car-oriented cities, with all implications following from this.
The goal is to dive deeply into this example in order to better understand how the area has changed over time and which impact on the urban character and its quality was generated. This implies a very detailed and place-specific analysis of the landscape context.
Building on the analytical phase, the second phase shifts from understanding the existing condition to anticipating possible futures and translating them into spatial propositions. The final and third project phase moves into a precise spatial design.

The project is supervised by Dr. Ellen Fetzer, Prof. Tilman Latz and Prof. Dr. Michael Roth.
